Ramadan Reflections ‘09
Aug 27th, 2009
Today we will be broadcasting a live Zakat Q & A session today at 6.30pm.
There will be a brief presentation by Abdallah Seymour covering the fiqh of Zakat according to the Maliki School followed by a live question and answer session. On the panel will be Hajj Amal Douglas, Hajj Abdal Haqq Bewley & Hajj Abdassamd Clarke.
During Ramadan we will be broadcasting a series of special live classes from the Ihsan Mosque in Norwich. The classes will take place on Mondays and Thursdays one hour before iftar
- On Mondays Shaykh Ali Laraki will deliver an hour-long class covering tafsir of the last chapters of the Qur’an.
- On Thursdays Hajj Abdal Haqq will be delivering the Ramadan Discourses, which Shaykh Muhammad ibn al-Habib gave in his zawiyya in Meknes in the year he died. He was over 100 at the time.
C>Media will be recording the classes each week and streaming them live here on our website (www.muslimsofnorwich.org.uk)

Come on Norwich guys ! Hurry up
Nearly iftar now
Al hamdulillah
Checked the website this afternoon and so was pleasantly suprised to see that Hajj
Abdal Haqq’s class was being streamed live, as I was not going to be able to attend,
as is probably the case for those women with young children.
It would be great to see all the classes streamed live, insha Allah.
This is really beneficial. Dont stop here, o muslims of Norwich. Keep on helping the rest of us by adding more durûs.
And as a side comment to our honoured sister.
And may Allah bless all those dedicated sisters staying at home giving tarbiyah to our upcoming generations. Know O sisters that your khidmah is worth more than our attendance
in the mosques.
Alhamdulillah .
Thank you for streaming this.
Asalamo Aliekum we Rahmet Allah we Barakato,
I wonder if there will be a live broad cast day Inshaa Allah?
Asalamo Aliekum we Rahmet Allah we Barakato,
I wonder if there will be a live broadcast today Inshaa Allah?
wa alaikum as-salam wa rahmatullah wa barakatuh,
Yes, there should be a live broadcast today at 6:30pm insha’Allah.
Abdassamad
Mashaa Allah, What a wonderful lecture. El hamdollah that you were able to broadcast it, as the attending live lesson is much more convenient then downloading and listening to recorded lecture. El hamdollah I was able to visit the mosque before and attend Friday prayers and I did enjoy the knowledgeable lecture and people’s warmth in the mosque.
May Allah give you the means to keep broadcasting, giving such great lectures and May Allah reward all of you for your effort in this life and heart after.
See you on Monday Inshaa Allah,
Aslamo Aliekum
Asalam alaykum,
Nothing on?? Just a 10sec clip of talking in background. Is their a tech problem? May Allah cure it!
Ramadhan Mubarak from Sheffield.
Asad
Amin to that, sidi Asad. How can we be cured if it is nor cured? C´mon muslims of Norwich, Sweden and Sheffield is waiting eagerly.
Did you manage to see the broadcast? It did go out. We monitored here in the office.
Abdassamad
Asalam Alaykum Sidi Abdas Samad,
Alas no – no podcast. Hajj Abdal Haqqs 1st podcast has disappeared (which i managed to watch). Shaykh Alis podcast is also viewable, but the latest one which i take was meant to be Hajj Abdal Haqqs 2nd class is actually a book cover of “Banking the root cause” which Sidi Najib heard talking in the background for 10seconds. Then it stops.
This is what i get externally coming in trying to connect……??
Ramadhan Kareem
It´s a pity Hajj Abdalhaqq´s dars can´t be seen. I fell in love with his first lesson. Is the recording intact or has the ship sailed?
ASWRWB,
Is yesterday video recorded somewhere, as I have missed the first part and I want to review it?
Mahmoud
Asalam Alaykum
Our apologies, the class definitely streamed live but for some reason has not been saved.
Hopefully we’ll have this sorted in time for Monday’s class with Shaykh Ali.
Hanif
WSWRWB Bro Hanif,
No worries brother.
Jazak Allah kheir for your effort. May Allah reward you in this life and hereafter.
Mahmoud
ASWRWB,
Jazak all kheir my brothers for the beneficial lecture about Zakah (Mashaa Allah). I have few questions if you don’t mind.
1) First of all, I am bit confused about the nesab. if for example the nesab is 100 pounds and i have saving for 150 pounds, should I pay zakah ONLY on the extra 50 pounds (which is the amount over the nesab) or should I pay zakah for the whole 150 pounds?
2) After I calculate the amount I should pay as zakah (from saved money or assets or any belonging I have), am I supposed to give all that amount in denar or derham?
3) I am used to pay my zakah to a charity organization which I volunteer with. We use this money to buy food, cloth, blankets …etc for the poor/needy people and sometimes we spend them on projects like extending water pipes to poor people houses to have a supply of clean water to drink and use. Another way of spending these money is by helping poor families to start a small project to generate income. My question is if I bought denars to give to this organizations, we will sell it again to have money to implement the above projects, would it be ok to just give the money directly?
4) Unfortunately, I didn’t see the update about the lecture until it was over, but el hamdollah I was able to see the recording. I wonder if there is a mailing list that I can add my email to receive such important updates as I don’t want to miss such great lectures. I would be grateful if you can keep me updated.
My apologies for the many (and long) questions.
May Allah reward you for your efforts in this life and hereafter.
Mahmoud
wa alaikum as-salam,
Sidi Mahmoud,
1. A more realistic example is that the nisab is £1800 and you have £1850. Then you pay zakat on the full amount.
2. Yes, you should pay the zakat in dinars and dirhams. If you have difficulties we have zakat collectors who are accustomed to working it out.
3. May Allah reward you for giving to the charities you mention, but this is not the correct way to pay zakat. Zakat is paid to the leader of the community who gives it to those cases he thinks most deserving from among the categories Allah defines in the Qur’an. He gives it locally unless he cannot find any worthy recipients in which case he gives it further afield. But he does not send it very far away. The principle is to give to the closest and then to the next closest. People who are far away and in great need should certainly be helped if we can do so, but it is not by means of zakat but through other charitable means. One point that was made is that charitable organisations should definitely not be collecting zakat, but they should rather be establishing awqaf (charitable endowments) which would yield incomes for their undoubtedly worthy ends.
4. There is no mailing list at present, but the site has got an RSS feed and it might be worth your while taking advantage of that if you can. That said, we have not really given much notice about these talks so far. Insha’Allah, in future we are going to have a more structured and programmed system of broadcast lectures.
Regards,
Abdassamad
ouch!!
May Allah protect us
?
ASWRWB,
First of all sorry for my late reply and Jazak Allah khier for your answers.
Apparently I seems I still need to learn a lot about zakah and el hamdollah that I was able to view this great lecture. I have bookmark the four given websites and Inshaa allah will read more into them so I can follow the sunnah and not innovations. Thank you for the guidance.
In the NGO, my role is not administrator as my knowledge is limited so inshaa allah I will try to talk them and ask them to put more effort in checking they are doing the right sunnah way. The NGO has a leader that knows the people in the distribution areas and know the current situations (financial and need wise) and he picks according to their needs. El hamdollah sometimes we are able to prepare lots stuff to give away so end we distributes to several different areas which the Leader communicates to those areas leaders who knows the people and knows their situations.
Thank you for the RSS feed, I will be trying to use it to keep updated Inshaa allah so I wont miss these lectures. El hamdollah, I have good experience in mailing list and website and I would be happy to volunteer to do something that would help my brothers and sisters in Islam. If that is possible Inshaa Allah, please let me know who should I talk too.
Finally, I have another question, it was mentioned that I only pay zakah for money that i owned for a year, but it is usually hard to know that, as I deposit money in account and withdraw different amount through the year. By the end of the year it will be hard to know which money i had for the whole year, what should i do?
Thanks again for your help.
May Allah (swt) shower his blessing on you during this blessed month – ameen
Mahmoud
As salamou alaikum Mahmoud
Regarding your query about paying zakat on money you have had for a year:
You should keep an eye on the value of your monetary wealth. As you say you keep it in your bank account then its quite simple to do- at the moment your bank balance reaches the nisab (the nisab is roughly £1800) then start from then. If at any point your balance goes below that then stop counting. If the balance reaches the nisab again then start the counting again. If you are fortunate enough to not go below the nisab for one lunar year (roughly 354 days) then you pay 2.5% on the minimum amount you had for that time. So for example, you had a nice windfall and your balance goes to £3000. You start counting from then and after a full lunar year you never went below £3000. You then pay 2.5% of £3000 which is £75. This should be paid in gold, and to your Amir. And then you start counting in preparation to pay again in one lunar year’s time……
Hope that helps
Abdallah
I am confused with the podcasts. It is difficult to seem them live, which was fine with HAH’s first Ramadan discourse as it is still available, but that is it. I don’t see anymore. Shaykh Ali’s are there but it is a very confusing list on the same date. I want to see HAH’s talks is this possible?
WSWRWB Abdallah,
Jazak Allah kheir for your help. That was very useful Inshaa Allah.
Mahmoud
Asalaamu alaykum,
I can only seem to find one of Hajj AbdalHaqq’s discourses.
As-salamu’alaykum Hajj Issa,
I’ve look into the podcast problem and have reorganised the way the podcasts are listed.
Unfortunately only one of Hajj Abdal Haqq’s classes has been recorded and saved and this can be viewed with the stikam player at the bottom of the page. Inshallah tonights recording and live streaming will go without a hitch.
I hope you and your family are well.
Yahya
As-salamu alaikum,
Our apologies to everyone who has been trying to follow the broadcasts from the Ihsan mosque of discourses by Hajj Abdalhaqq Bewley and Shaykh Ali Laraki. We have been trying out various ways of streaming the discourses live while at the same time saving a copy for permanent reference later, but, unfortunately, with mixed results. Please be patient while we strive to iron out these difficulties.
Abdassamad
ASWRWB,
I was wondering if the online live classes will continue after ramadan? The ramadan classes streaming experience was very beneficial/efficacious and I was hoping you would be able continue this great effort so people who cannot attend the class could benefit as well and as same time the record lecture act as reference to us incase we want to revise our knowledge.
May Allah reward you for your effort and give you the means to maintain this great work.
Mahmoud
Sidi Mahmoud
It is our intention to begin on-line teaching insha’Allah, and the Ramadan Reflections’ broadcasts were part of a pilot project for that.
Abdassamad
ASWRWB Abdassamad,
Thanks a lot for your reply. I really look forward to attend those classes Inshaa Allah.
Mahmoud
ASWRWB,
I have a question about Zakah. My mum cousin’s husband died round a year ago. He left some money and assets for her and her two kids. One of the kids is below 21 years old, so according to the law where they live, his heritage would be monitor by the government to make sure no body misuse it. Due to the long red tape problems, it is a hectic job to spend money, as she need to go through a long process every time. So she decided to leave the money as it is, until next year, when the kid reaches 21 then he can handle his money freely.
So her question is, does she have to may zakah for that money? Taking in consideration:
1- that his total share of heritage is over the nesab amount
2- she has no control over this money since the government is controlling it now.
Thank a lot for your help in advance.
Mahmoud
wa alaikum as-salam,
When he takes possession of the money then he pays the zakat due on it, if it is over the nisab. Since the gold dinar is £90 and the nisab is 20 gold dinars, then if the money is over £1,800 he must pay zakat at the rate of 2 1/2% on it when he receives it if that is a year since the inheritance was appointed for him.
His mother doesn’t have to pay the zakat on it as it is not in her possession, and he only pays zakat when the money comes into his possession.
And Allah knows best.
Abdassamad
ASWRWB,
Jazak Allah kheir brother Abdassamd for answer tons of endless questions. Thank you for the details answer and useful knowledge.
May Allah reward you in this life and hereafter.
Mahmoud
The Moroccans say لا شكر على واجب – no thanks are needed for a duty, but one is always grateful for your du‘a, jazaka’llahu khayran.
